When I first heard of Disney buying LucasFilm, it really wasn't a shock for me. The Star Wars brand and Disney have always held a working relationship with each other and it only seemed right that Disney would be the one to purchase it.
What did surprise me was the shuttering of LucasArts. They had recently announced a new Star Wars game, Star Wars: 1313 and had other projects in the works. At first Disney had moved most of the LucasFilm and Arts departments focus into working on the latest Star Wars film. Now with the closing of LucasArts doors, Disney Interactive Studios would be the main component behind any further Star Wars game or the franchise would be licensed out to third party developers.
But the actual reason they decided to close down LucasArts is to use is as a license instead of a developer. I see no reason why they had to do this. Maybe Disney did not want to have two main video game developers in the house. In my opinion, Disney should of shut down Disney Interactive Studios, moved that staff over to LucasArts and maintain it as a developer. This would of kept the brand name that is LucasArts alive in the video game world and would hold more weight to video games.
I could only hope that the LucasArts name be used wisely by Disney. Such great games were produced by them throughout their 30-year history. The studio along with its staff will truly be missed in the video game world. Disney might soon feel the pressure of the millions of Star Wars fans out there to create the next great Star Wars game; let's see if they can deliver.
